Over the weekend, CBS Sports issued a report which got Steeler Nation‘s attention. According to their “sources,” quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is expected to make his return to the Pittsburgh Steelers on October 25th. Yeah, I’m late. I was up late on a work night for obvious reasons. Besides, I’m sure everybody saw what happened last night. There will be much talking about and digital ink spilled on the Baltimore Ravens 23-20 overtime win over the Pittsburgh Steelers but to me it’s a bunch of sound and fury signifying nothing.
We lost because our kicker sucks. Period. End of story.
I hate to be *that* guy but after Josh Scobee missed an extra point in our week 2 victory over the Niners, I wrote the following:
“I’m so glad we traded a 6th round pick for a totally useless kicker that probably should be cut before he costs us a game (and, mark my words, he WILL cost us a game eventually).”
And, sure enough, eventually finally happened (RIP Yogi). I understand sports is not a knee-jerk business. I get as frustrated as anybody when a player makes one bad pitch or one bad play and 200 yinzers on Twitter want him cut. But at the same time, there are times when you can clearly see somebody doesn’t have it. Once upon a time, an AFC North match-up promised to be a tight low-scoring game between two teams with hard-hitting ferocious defenses. My how times have changed. The North now features two of the top five offenses in football and three of the top fifteen. Plus the Browns!
Defense? We don’t need no stinkin’ defense.
The North also features two of the bottom tier defenses in the NFL. One of those belongs to those loveable Browns. The other? It’s held by the 0-3 Baltimore Ravens. Times have changed indeed.
Nobody has to tell the Pittsburgh Steelers about change. Our defense has a new coordinator for the first time since 2004. Troy Polamalu has retired as has Ike Taylor and every other defensive luminary from our two recent Super Bowl winning teams. Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger spoke for the first time since sustaining that scary looking knee injury last Sunday against the Rams. In my recap, I mentioned the look on Ben’s face not being his usual poker face when suffering an injury. Turns out, there was reason for that. Ben told reporters when he initially got to the sideline he feared his leg was broken.

The Pittsburgh Steelers left Sunday with a 12-6 victory over the St. Louis Rams. As far as victories go, this was about as hollow as they get. Early in the third quarter, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger stepped up in the pocket only to get his knee bent in an way knees aren’t supposed to bend by a lunging Mark Barron. Ah, good old St. Louis. Pittsburgh sports fans have already spent the better part of the summer cursing their baseball team for being a thorn in the side of the Pittsburgh Pirates. On Sunday, they get the chance to earn the ire of local football fans as well when the Pittsburgh Steelers travel out to take on the St. Louis Rams. That city has a chance to become very hated very fast here in the ‘Burgh.
Of course, the big news going into this game is the return of running back Le’Veon Bell from his two game suspension. The Black and Gold currently has the top ranked offense in all of football without the best all-around back in the game. Poor DeAngelo Williams now retreats to a back-up role having only putting up numbers good enough to be the league’s second leading rusher during Bell’s absence. Running back Le’Veon Bell returns to the Pittsburgh Steelers this Sunday. Good news for everybody except our opponents. And maybe DeAngelo Williams, who just so happens to be the league’s second leading rusher. Also, it could mean unemployment for Dri Archer since we don’t need four backs, especially one that’s utterly useless.
Er, anyway the point here is Le’Veon Bell is coming back. It’s still two more weeks before wide receiver Martavis Bryant is eligible to return from his suspension. “Eligible” being the operative word as even once he can return, there’s no guarantee that he will. Boy, that was fun.
The Pittsburgh Steelers notched their first win of the season by obliterating the San Francisco 49ers 43-18. Yes, there’s still a lot of football left to be played in 2015. And, yes, the Niners were at a pretty big disadvantage having to travel across country on a short week while their opponent had ten days to prepare. Those things given, it’s hard to be anything less than impressed with the Black and Gold’s showing yesterday.
A thorough recap would be impossible because pretty much everybody on our side played a great game. Ben Roethlisberger was as close to perfection as you can get, going 21-27 for 369 yards and three TDs. Antonio Brown caught 9 of them for 195 and a TD. DeAngelo Williams – Le’Veon who? – in his final start for the foreseeable rushed for 77 yards and 3 TDs.
