Steve McClendon Is A Dancing Machine

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a long and storied tradition when it comes to dance. Hall of Famer Lynn Swann was able to contort his body to make those insanely athletic catches we see on the highlight films thanks to a childhood spent studying ballet. Recently, future Hall of Famer Hines Ward competed on “Dancing With The Stars” and came away with the MirrorBall Trophy despite no formal dance training whatsoever.

So about the Pittsburgh Steelers’ new look secondary…

A couple days ago, I mentioned the alarming number of injuries which have already befallen the team’s cornerbacks. The most distressing of which was the “knee discomfort” (Mike Tomlin‘s words, not mine) that had sidelined presumptive starter Cortez Allen. Turns out the “discomfort” was a lot more serious than the kind you treat with a hot tub and some Ben Gay. Allen underwent “minor knee surgery” (again, Tomlin’s words) yesterday and is expected to miss the next couple weeks at the very least.Read More »Cortez Allen Down, Possibly Out

Running Back Battle Heats Up

Bell

When Pittsburgh Steelers defensive lineman Brett Keisel rolled into Latrobe in a dump truck announcing the team was “under construction,” he was merely stating the obvious. The Steelers are a team in transition.

No position is more wide open than at running back. When Todd Haley was hired, his first order of business was getting back to “Stiller Football” by establishing a strong consistent running game to complement the passing attack and take some pressure off Ben Roethlisberger. The rushing attack was more or less a miserable failure during year one of the Haley Regime. With Rashard Mendenhall mercifully tap dancing his way to join Bruce Arians down in  Pittsburgh West Arizona, the Black and Gold were left no clear cut number one back.

Steelers Secondary Already Banged Up

I jinxed them.

On Monday, I remarked how fortunate the Pittsburgh Steelers have been on the injury front as we approach their first full week of training camp. For my insolence, the Football Gods have decided to smite down several members of the Black and Gold’s new look secondary. The injury situation has gotten serious enough for the team to make a roster move, signing CB Ryan Steed for insurance. Steed was an undrafted rookie who went to training camp with the Jets last season before spending the remainder of the year on the Saints’ practice squad. He has never appeared in an NFL game.

Troy Polamalu Refuses To Cheat

NFL: NOV 28 Steelers at Bills

The Pittsburgh Steelers have spent the past two off-seasons systematically pruning their roster of aging and oft-injured veterans. One player who fits both criteria is Pro Bowl safety Troy Polamalu. Unlike many of his longtime teammates, Troy is back this season for his 11th go-round in the Black and Gold. Whether or not it’s his last remains to be seen.

Mike Tomlin Joins Twitter

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is known as one of the most well-spoken head coaches in football. Steeler Nation is well-versed in his affinity for unnecessarily fancy verbiage (for example, instead of saying a guy is versatile, he’d say they are “positionally flexible.”) and using ten words to explain what could be said in two. As of Friday, Coach Tomlin will endeavor to be answer capable while limiting himself to 140 characters or less.

Steelers Roll Into Training Camp

dump

The Pittsburgh Steelers arrived in Latrobe on Friday, officially kicking off training camp with their annual Welcome Back “conditioning test” aka long-ass run. I’m happy to report there were no stragglers this season, sparing us the ignominious sight of a lone out-of-shape fatso struggling to jiggle their enormous mass across the rolling hills of St. Vincent’s College (I’m looking at you, Casey Hampton). Even offensive lineman Mike Adams completed the test, an impressive feat considering he’s only two months removed from being stabbed in the gut.

Pouncey Wears “Free Hernandez” Hat, Internet Explodes

Pouncey Free Hernandez

Pittsburgh Steelers All-Pro center Maurkice Pouncey was out partying over the weekend with his twin brother Mike. True to my father’s advice that “nothing good ever happens at a night club after 1 a.m.”, both twins were photographed wearing hats emblazoned with the words “Free Hernandez.”Predictably, this sent the football news starved Internet into a feeding frenzy when the pic was reposted by virtually every major sports blog.Read More »Pouncey Wears “Free Hernandez” Hat, Internet Explodes
