Steelers Playoff Scenarios Simplified (Not Really)

  • by

tim-tebow-steelers

With a win last Sunday, the Pittsburgh Steelers are poised to make their first postseason appearance since getting Tebow’d out back in 2011. While they haven’t officially clinched anything yet, they’re in good shape heading into the last two weeks of the season. At this point,  going 0-2 would be the only deathblow to their chances. While neither the Chiefs nor Bengals are exactly easy wins, it’s certainly nice to have control of our own destiny for a change.

The NFL’s system of rankings and tiebreakers is confusing to say the least. I’ve done these posts numerous times in my nearly ten years of blogging and if I’m being honest I don’t always get it right. Of course, I’ve heard broadcasters on national TV get the scenarios wrong so I’m hardly alone in my confusion. Anyway, without further ado, here are the Steelers playoff scenarios simplified (not really).Read More »Steelers Playoff Scenarios Simplified (Not Really)

Will Bell’s Wheels Fall Off?

Le’Veon Bell is having a breakout season. After a solid if unspectacular rookie campaign, Bell has quickly emerged as one of the most dangerous offensive weapons in the NFL. The Pittsburgh Steelers know this and have adjusted their offense accordingly. However, the question we need to ask is how hot can Bell’s engine run before he blows a gasket?

When Mike Tomlin was hired as head coach in 2007, he was asked what kind of offense he intended to run. In their never-ending desire to get back to “Stiller Football,” Coach T responded that he intended to feed running back Willie Parker “until the wheels fell off.” In the second to last game of the season against the Rams, the wheels did indeed come off for Parker when he suffered a broken leg. The Super Bowl hero would come back to play for two more mediocre seasons but never recaptured his former glory after the injury robbed Fast Willie of his top end speed.Read More »Will Bell’s Wheels Fall Off?

Week 15 Recap: Over The Hump

Goodbye mediocrity…

The Pittsburgh Steelers have ended their run of two straight 8-8 seasons, notching their ninth victory of the season with a 27-20 win over the Atlanta Falcons. They also put themselves in excellent position as far notching their first post-season appearance in as many years. While the Black and Gold did not clinch anything yesterday, a win in either of their final two games gets them in. Sweeping the final two nets them the division title although other than it being a home game the division isn’t really that important as the AFC North champion is almost certainly going to be playing on Wild Card Weekend.

First things first though…Read More »Week 15 Recap: Over The Hump

Know Thy Enemy: Atlanta Falcons

Last weekend, the Pittsburgh Steelers took a big step toward securing their first playoff berth in three years. If their usual pattern holds, this weekend they’ll take two steps back when they face the mediocre Atlanta Falcons. Granted, the Falcons are technically a first place team although calling them that is a little like calling someone the tallest midget. They’re 5-8 and alive for a playoff spot only by virtue of being in the laughable NFC South. By no objective measure are they a “good team.”

Unfortunately, it’s the bad teams which routinely give the Steelers the most trouble.Read More »Know Thy Enemy: Atlanta Falcons

Chris Rock Compares Ben To Bill Cosby

I have a feeling I’m going to still be blogging about this from my nursing home in 2035…

For those of you who ignore the news or don’t pay attention to celebrity gossip, a huge ongoing story this past month has been a series of rape allegations leveled against beloved comedian/Puddin’ Pop peddler Bill Cosby. Something like a dozen women, from average fans to aspiring actresses – not to mention the wife of Incredible Hulk Lou Ferrigno (Did Cosby miss the part about “Don’t make him angry…”)  – have stepped forward to accuse Doctor Huxtable of inappropriate sexual conduct. This being America, naturally lawyers are involved. It’s all a very sordid tale.

Well, comedian Chris Rock decided to sound off on the Cosby controversy by calling Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger “the original Cosby” at a movie premiere on Tuesday. Read More »Chris Rock Compares Ben To Bill Cosby

Keisel Out For Year…And Why That’s Not Necessarily Bad

As I’ve mentioned before, I spent the Thanksgiving holiday with my family down in Florida. I tried keeping up with any important news concerning the Pittsburgh Steelers but between food hangovers and travel woes, some things fell through the cracks. Most notably, I missed the news that defensive end Brett Keisel suffered a torn tricep that will officially end his 2014 season.

Well, I didn’t exactly “miss it.” I just didn’t report it here. Watching the game at a Steeler bar, as soon as I saw the Diesel walking off holding his arm I figured he tore his bicep/tricep. Meanwhile, the Steelers waited until before game time to announce James Harrison would also be sitting out with a balky knee so that one’s on them. Week 14 Recap: Answering The Bell

Martavis Bryant 94 TD Catch

Well, that was unexpected…

A week after a miserable showing against the Saints, the Pittsburgh Steelers went out and crushed the Cincinnati Bengals 42-21 to tighten the race in both the AFC North and AFC Playoffs. How convincing was this victory? So convincing Andy Dalton watched the final five minutes from the sideline after Marvin Lewis all but threw in the towel.

Of course, if the Black and Gold hold to 2014 form, I fully expect them to crap the bed next week in Atlanta.Read More »Week 14 Recap: Answering The Bell

Know Thy Enemy: Cincinnati Bengals

It comes down to this…

I’ve done these previews all season and all season I’ve tried to avoid the ridiculous hype you read on blogs or that seemingly infests sports talk radio. I’ve called certain games key or mentioned a win was crucial for this reason or that but I’ve purposely avoided calling any game a “must-win.” Well, this week the Pittsburgh Steelers face the Cincinnati Bengals and it’s about a close to a must-win situation as you can get. No, a loss doesn’t eliminate them from playoff contention but it does deal their chances a critical blow.

Naturally, it comes down to the Cincinnati Bengals.Read More »Know Thy Enemy: Cincinnati Bengals

Steelers Destiny Is In Their Hands

Ah, nothing like leaving balmy 75 degree Florida and being welcomed back to the ‘Burgh by a brisk 35 degree day.

With the holidays temporarily behind us, we can focus on important things…like whether or not the Pittsburgh Steelers will make the playoffs. To be honest, after everything I’ve seen, this smells like another 8-8 team to me. While mediocrity seems to be a league-wide epidemic this year, I’m not sure if 8-8 will be good enough to make the post-season in the AFC. With six teams currently tied at 7-5 for the second Wild Card spot, I’d wager 9-7 will be needed to make the playoffs.

That’s the bad news.Read More »Steelers Destiny Is In Their Hands

Week 13 Recap: Turkey Day

At least I found a nice Steeler Bar to watch the game…

Fresh and invigorated from their bye week, the Pittsburgh Steelers went out and played like a bunch of turkeys, losing to the New Orleans Saints 35-32 at Heinz Field. Hey, they only lost by a field goal so it was a pretty tight game, right? Never has a final score been more misleading. Two garbage time touchdowns, one occurring literally in the game’s final seconds, served to make the end result look a lot closer than it actually was.

I’m shocked Mike Tomlin even bothered to use his super-secret special two point conversion plays in such a meaningless situation.Read More »Week 13 Recap: Turkey Day
