Life Without Big Ben: Part 2

Sometimes I feel like Bill Murray in “Groundhog Day.” Except instead of reliving the same day over and over, I keep typing the same “What are the Steelers gonna do with Joe Schmokowski injured?” post every other week.

This week’s edition concerns Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. As we all saw last Sunday, he was carted off the field for the second time this season, this time with an unspecified ankle injury. Well, the good news was the MRI was negative. It’s being called a mid-foot sprain which takes an unspecified amount of time to heal – basically, you can play as soon as the pain subsides enough to be manageable. Continue reading »

Know Thy Enemy: Kansas City Chiefs

Ah, the classic trap game. Hard believe the Pittsburgh Steelers would even have a trap game considering the amount of adversity they’ve had to weather thus far. But this week’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs almost certainly falls into that category. A 4-2 team coming off two straight big wins facing a 1-5 bottom dweller with a huge division showdown looming on the horizon has all the makings of a trap.

Especially when you don’t know who your quarterback is going to be. Ben Roethlisberger has returned to practice albeit on a limited basis. Michael Vick allegedly has a “hamstring sprain” which is an interesting way to phrase “He blows and we don’t wanna play him.” Mike Tomlin won’t commit to Big Ben so all signs point to Landry Jones making his first career start. Beachum Out For Season, Steelers Tab Ranger

Another week, another devastating injury for the Pittsburgh Steelers. I used to think Mike Tomlin‘s “Next Man Up” philosophy was a bunch of rah-rah b.s. As much criticism I send his way, I have to give Tomlin credit for never letting adversity rock the ship. Whether I believe it or not, the players seem to wholeheartedly embrace the idea Next Man Up no matter who they’re being asked to replace.

This past Sunday, the Steelers lost left tackle Kelvin Beachum for the season to a torn ACL. It was an ugly picture with his knee bending in a way a knee should not bend. Pretty much the second he left the field I figured he was done for. Only Ben Roethlisberger seems to be gifted with a Wolverine-like healing factor. Continue reading »

Know Thy Enemy: Arizona Cardinals

Sorry for the lack of posting this week. I’ve been a bit under the weather but I’m making a comeback. Ben Roethlisberger would love to make a comeback of his own this week after returning to practice the past few days. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear to be in the Cards.

Thank you, I’ll be here all week. Try the veal.

Ben would surely love to play this week, not only to help the Pittsburgh Steelers try and keep pace with the undefeated Bengals but because our opponents are the Arizona Cardinals. The Cards are coached by old friend Bruce Arians, our offensive coordinator for five seasons until he “retired” (for about 48 hours). Arians has long been hailed as Ben’s best friend in football. In fact, despite overseeing some pretty good offenses – including our first 4,000 yard passer, 1,000 yard rusher, and 1,000 yard receiver in the same season – Arians retired was fired primarily because the team felt he was too chummy with his quarterback. Know Thy Enemy: San Diego Chargers

Another week, another prime time game for the Pittsburgh Steelers. This week’s opponent is the San Diego Chargers. Ordinarily, the storyline for this game would be Philip Rivers and how he stacks up with Ben Roethlisberger, both products of the storied QB Class of ’04. However, with Ben sidelined and Rivers coming off a year where his team failed to make the playoffs the game becomes less about storylines and more about two teams desperate to keep their head above water.

Both teams currently sit at 2-2 on the season. Both teams are coming off less than inspiring outings. The Steelers, of course, lost an overtime heartbreaker to Baltimore that easily could’ve been a win had they had a halfway decent kicker. The Chargers beat the Cleveland Browns last week but the fact it was a 30-27 shoot out has to be a cause for concern. Continue reading »

Big Ben Says No Harm, Maybe A Foul

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger spoke for the first time since sustaining that scary looking knee injury last Sunday against the Rams. In my recap, I mentioned the look on Ben’s face not being his usual poker face when suffering an injury. Turns out, there was reason for that. Ben told reporters when he initially got to the sideline he feared his leg was broken.

Which makes the fact he chose to limp off the field instead of taking the cart pretty damn crazy. Continue reading »

Know Thy Enemy: St. Louis Rams

Ah, good old St. Louis. Pittsburgh sports fans have already spent the better part of the summer cursing their baseball team for being a thorn in the side of the Pittsburgh Pirates. On Sunday, they get the chance to earn the ire of local football fans as well when the Pittsburgh Steelers travel out to take on the St. Louis Rams. That city has a chance to become very hated very fast here in the ‘Burgh.

Of course, the big news going into this game is the return of running back Le’Veon Bell from his two game suspension. The Black and Gold currently has the top ranked offense in all of football without the best all-around back in the game. Poor DeAngelo Williams now retreats to a back-up role having only putting up numbers good enough to be the league’s second leading rusher during Bell’s absence. He filled in admirably but he’s no Bell, although I’m sure the team will give him work if only to hopefully stave off last year’s situation where an injury to Bell put the kibosh on their chances of making a run in the playoffs. Your 2015 Pittsburgh Steelers

With the 2015 season kicking off in less than three days, there was no rest for the Pittsburgh Steelers on Labor Day. They made a flurry of roster moves to finalize their 53 man in advance of Thursday’s expected massacre at the hands of the New England Patriots. The most notable of which was placing center Maurkice Pouncey on short term IR meaning he can be activated after week 9 and leaving open the possibility of him returning to the field this year. In the meantime, old friend Doug Legursky was signed as back-up depth at guard/center while Cody Wallace takes over at center.

I apologize for my dire outlook on the upcoming Patriots game but the Steelers had one of the worst defenses in the league last year and apparently have done little to improve it. It’s hard to be optimistic when you’re facing a defending Super Bowl champion who’s gonna come out with a deflated chip on their shoulders. Continue reading »

Michael Vick Signs With Steelers

Oh boy…

Can we ever have one nice quiet preseason? Just one? Please? Is that too much to ask?

Apparently, Maurkice Pouncey wasn’t the only one to suffer a significant injury in Sunday’s game against Green Bay. Back-up quarterback Bruce Gradkowski left with an undisclosed “wrist injury” which has been disclosed to have required season-ending surgery. Which put the Black and Gold in the market for a quarterback. And they found one, oh boy did they find one.

Michael Vick has signed a one year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Continue reading »

Know Thy Wild Card Enemy: Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens.

Of course it had to be the Baltimore Ravens.

After a two season absence from the NFL Playoffs, the Pittsburgh Steelers return this Saturday night when they host the Ratbirds at Heinz Field. If you’re going to return to post-season, why not make it another chapter in what is undoubtedly one of the best rivalries in football. This will be the fourth time since 2000 that the Black and Gold have faced the Ravens three times in the same season. The first time, they were quarterbacked by Kordell Stewart in his last grasp at greatness, the last two they were led by Ben Roethlisberger on his way to a Super Bowl appearance. Continue reading »
