Know Thy Enemy: Houston Texans

Well, the last national showcase went pretty well…

The Pittsburgh Steelers host the Houston Texans on Monday Night Football. Their last prime time appearance was their resounding win over the confounding Carolina Panthers, a team that got whupped in back-to-back weeks by the Steelers and Ravens then beat a good Bears team before battling the Bengals to a tie last week. Maybe Cam Newton really was banged up or maybe he just hadn’t developed any chemistry with his overhauled receiving corps. I’m not sure what that win means other than the old “on any given Sunday…”

What I do know is the Steelers have no chance against any team that has a decent quarterback.

Luckily for us, the Texans don’t have one.Read More »Know Thy Enemy: Houston Texans

What Happened To Accountability On The Steelers?

I’ve been thinking about all the problems facing the Pittsburgh Steelers. Make no mistake, the list is long and the problems are many while solutions are few and far between. This is a franchise in deep deep trouble even if they, and legions of fans who still wear Black and Gold colored glasses, refuse to acknowledge it. The Steelers ship has hit the iceberg – a physical iceberg, not the Penguins’ loveable mascot, although I wouldn’t be surprised if the Todd-meister ran him over in his suped up El Camino – now the only question is who will be going down with the ship.

When I think about the Steelers sad state of affairs, I keep coming back to one word:  ACCOUNTABILITY. The GM stinks, the coaching stinks, the players by and large stink but I can’t help but think things would at least be marginally better if the stinkers involved were held accountable. Guys take dumb penalties and are sent right back on the field. Coaches call insane plays in important situations and nobody owns up to it. And players who can’t play demonstrate their lack of ability week after week with little to no repercussions. Read More »What Happened To Accountability On The Steelers?

Mike Tomlin Press Conference: Same Old BS

I gotta hand it to the Pittsburgh Steelers head coach. He isn’t totally incapable of learning from past mistakes.

Yesterday was the Mike Tomlin press conference. When the Steelers were coming off other embarrassing losses during his inept regime, he would use the occasion to make grand sweeping promises that he had no intention of keeping. First there was the infamous promise to “Unleash Hell” in December of 2009 which the Steelers unleashed to the tune of losing their next two games. Last season changes were promised in the wake of an 0-4 start yet in week five it was the same 22 guys who started and basically the same guys who played.

So what did Tomlin promise in the aftermath of the Cleveland Browns handing the Black and Gold their worst Rivalry ass-kicking in twenty odd years?Read More »Mike Tomlin Press Conference: Same Old BS

Week 6 Recap: Getting What They Deserve

Nobody panic. Antonio Brown caught seven passes to keep his reception streak record alive.

Under the Mike Tomlin regime, it’s only the truly important things that count!

In less important news, the Pittsburgh Steelers lost 31-10 to the Cleveland Browns. Actually, they didn’t so much “lose” as get their asses handed to them. After a sluggish first quarter where both teams seemed determined to out-suck each other, the Browns kicked it into gear and never looked back. It was by far the easiest win they’ve had this season and oh by the way it was their easiest win over the Steelers since a 49 point shellacking they gave us way back in 1989.

And you know what? Nothing that happened yesterday surprised me in the least.

The Steelers are a terrible team. Awful. Horrible. Pathetic. Insert whatever adjective you’d like.Read More »Week 6 Recap: Getting What They Deserve

Know Thy Enemy: Cleveland Browns

So, we meet again…

For the second and final time this season, the Pittsburgh Steelers will renew their rivalry with the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. We all remember the season opener at Heinz Field which was basically a tale of two halves. The Black and Gold played the first half like world beaters, looking like the kind of team that could be a legit Super Bowl contender when all the dust settles. Then the second half started and the Browns launched into a furious comeback before ultimately falling short thanks to a Stonecold Shaun Suisham field goal with time expiring.

Comebacks seem to be the Browns thing this season. They got off to a good start against New Orleans before the Saints rallied to take a one point lead late in the fourth. The Browns got a walk-off field goal of their own to pull of the upset. They were on the losing end of another last second field goal a week later when Joe Flacco brought his Ravens back from a third quarter deficit to pull out a narrow victory. Then last week, the Browns were down by 25 points (!?!?!) to the Tennessee Titans then staged what is now the greatest road comeback in NFL history. Read More »Know Thy Enemy: Cleveland Browns

Mike Tomlin: Player’s Coach Extraordinaire

Tomlin smirking tripping

Last week, I wrote a lengthy post about Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin and his apparent hostility towards being labelled “a player’s coach.” This week, I’m going begin by apologizing to Coach T. I’m big enough to admit when I’m wrong. He’s not player’s coach.

Mike Tomlin is a player’s coach extraordinaire.

Let me take you back to Sunday’s game against Jacksonville. Yeah, I know, I’d prefer to forget about that dull and uninspired effort myself although it does beat counting sheep for when you need to fall asleep. Fourth quarter, eight point lead, the Steelers had a 1st and 10 coming out of the two minute warning. Jacksonville was out of time outs.  I’m not good at the maths but I’m pretty sure the Steelers could’ve taken three knees and gotten out of Dodge.

One minor problem though: Antonio Brown only had four catches.Read More »Mike Tomlin: Player’s Coach Extraordinaire

Public Service Announcement: Terrible Towels Do Not Carry Ebola

Although the one seen floating in Jacksonville’s pool probably has some kind of STD.

I didn’t see it during the actual telecast – either it happened while I was making a sandwich or the director had a whole lot more sense than whoever was in charge of the team mascot – but evidently at some point during yesterday’s game the Jacksonville Jaguar‘s mascot got a hold of a Terrible Towel.

That’s not difficult considering 3/4 of the massive crowd was there to root for the Pittsburgh Steelers anyway. Nor is it surprising. Picking on the Towel has sadly become an all too common occurrence as bonehead fans and clueless players don’t seem to care that proceeds from the Terrible Towel are donated to a school for developmentally disabled children. All they can see is the symbol of Steeler Nation.Read More »Public Service Announcement: Terrible Towels Do Not Carry Ebola

Jacksonville Jaguars Pool Pink Bikini Terrible Towel Gif

Yo,  blonde in the pink bikini, hit me up some time. I’m on twitter.

The Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars 17-9 then proceeded to add insult to injury by taking over their pool. Not that many in the crowd of 70,000 were offended considering a solid two thirds of them were Steeler fans anyway. There are a lot of terrible fan bases in the NFL but none scrape the bottom of the barrel quite as badly as Jacksonville. We’re five games into the season and other than week two at Baltimore, I don’t think the Black and Gold have played an actual road game yet.

Where to start with yesterday’s performance… Read More »Week 5 Recap: Everybody Outta The Pool

It couldn’t possibly happen two weeks in a row…

Could it?

For the second consecutive week, the Pittsburgh Steelers will face an opponent that has gone O for the 2014 season. Sure, the Jacksonville Jaguars have proven to be a strangely troublesome foe – recall 2006 when Bill Cowher idiotically started a zombified Ben Roethlisberger and the team lost 9-0 or 2007 when the Jags beat us twice, including in the Wild Card game – but those glory days are long gone for the Jags. Jacksonville has been a laughingstock for years now. We couldn’t possibly crap the bed two weeks in a row, could we?

Yeah, I’m not sure I would put anything past this team, either.Read More »Know Thy Enemy: Jacksonville Jaguars

Mike Tomlin Just Doesn’t Get It

JMM TOMLIN 11 03

Mike Tomlin held his weekly press conference yesterday.

Did the Pittsburgh Steelers head coach shoulder the blame for the team’s embarrassing effort against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers? Did he accept responsibility for the reckless nature in which his team plays? Did he vow to crack down on the showboating and stupidity which led to the Steelers being flagged an incredible six times for various personal fouls amongst the many other infractions his team committed on Sunday?

C’mon, this is Mike Tomlin we’re talking about. Of course he didn’t.Read More »Mike Tomlin Just Doesn’t Get It
